What is simultaneous interpretation?
The interpreter renders the speech orally at the same time as the speaker, a few seconds behind. Seated in a soundproof booth, the interpreter listens through headphones and speaks into a microphone; participants choose their language on a receiver.
The meeting keeps the pace of a single-language meeting. It is the technique used by the European institutions, at congresses and at multilingual general assemblies.
The work requires intense concentration: beyond half an hour, interpreters work in pairs and take turns every 20 to 30 minutes. That is what keeps the interpretation accurate from the opening to the closing session.
Simultaneous, consecutive, whispered or remote: which technique?
| Technique | How it works | Best for | Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simultaneous | In real time, from a booth | Conferences, general assemblies, congresses, European committees | Booths, consoles, receivers, technician |
| Consecutive | The speaker pauses, the interpreter renders | Negotiations, official visits, short speeches, training | None (a microphone in large rooms) |
| Whispered | Softly, next to one to three listeners | Small groups, hearings, meetings, site visits | None, or a portable “bidule” kit |
| Remote | Interpreters connected to your online meeting | Webinars, Zoom or Teams meetings, hybrid events | Interpretation channel or dedicated platform |
The equipment for an interpreted conference
- Interpreting booths: one per target language, soundproofed and ventilated.
- Interpreter consoles: microphone, headphones and channel selection for each interpreter.
- Transmitter and receivers: infrared (confidential, no interference) or radio (more mobile), one receiver and headset per participant.
- Floor microphones: lectern and wireless microphones for questions, connected to the venue’s sound system.
- Portable “bidule” kit: for visits and small groups, without a booth.

Simultaneous interpretation: frequently asked questions
How many interpreters does a conference need?
As a rule, two interpreters per booth, so per target language, for any meeting longer than 30 to 40 minutes. A full day in French, Dutch and English therefore needs three booths and six interpreters.
How far in advance should I book?
Ideally three to four weeks before the event, more during busy EU periods. For urgent requests, contact us: we can often assemble a team within a few days.
Do you provide booths and headsets?
Yes: booths, consoles, transmitters, receivers, headsets and a technician, with or without our interpreters.
Can simultaneous interpretation work on Zoom or Teams?
Yes. Both offer interpretation channels: interpreters join your meeting and each participant picks a language.
What documents should we send the interpreters?
The programme, speaker list, slides, written speeches and any internal glossary.
Do you work outside Brussels?
Yes, across Belgium and Europe, with dedicated services in Luxembourg (Lingua Lux) and Geneva (Lingua Geneva).
What is the difference with consecutive interpretation?
In consecutive, the speaker pauses so the interpreter can render the message: speaking time doubles, but no equipment is needed.
