Whispered interpreting in Brussels: chuchotage for delegations and visits
Seated next to your guests, the whispered interpreter renders what is said in the room softly and in real time. Whispered interpretation, or chuchotage, is ideal for one to three people who do not speak the language of the meeting, with no booth or set-up.

What is whispered interpreting?
In whispered interpreting, also called chuchotage, the whispered interpreter sits next to or just behind the listeners and renders the speakers’ words in a low voice, simultaneously.
The meeting runs normally in its own language: only a few people receive the interpretation, with no headsets or booth. It is the solution for foreign delegations, official visits, hearings and board meetings where one or two members do not speak the language.
Whispering continuously is very tiring. Beyond about half an hour, we plan two whispered interpreters who take turns. For more than three listeners, or in a noisy room, a portable kit or simultaneous interpretation from a booth is preferable.
Simultaneous, consecutive, whispered or remote: which technique?
| Technique | How it works | Best for | Equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simultaneous | In real time, from a booth | Conferences, general assemblies, congresses, European committees | Booths, consoles, receivers, technician |
| Consecutive | The speaker pauses, the interpreter renders | Negotiations, official visits, short speeches, training | None (a microphone in large rooms) |
| Whispered | Softly, next to one to three listeners | Small groups, hearings, meetings, site visits | None, or a portable “bidule” kit |
| Remote | Interpreters connected to your online meeting | Webinars, Zoom or Teams meetings, hybrid events | Interpretation channel or dedicated platform |
Visits and small groups: the portable kit
For a group on the move, such as a factory, site or museum visit, the interpreter speaks into a portable microphone and participants listen on light receivers with earpieces. Interpreting stays discreet, even on the move or in a noisy environment.
This kit, often called a “bidule”, is available for hire from Lingua Rent.

Whispered interpreting: frequently asked questions
How many people can whispered interpreting serve?
One to three people seated next to the interpreter. Beyond that, or in a noisy room, we recommend a portable kit or simultaneous interpretation from a booth.
Whispered interpreting, chuchotage, whispering: what is the difference?
None: they all describe the same technique, where the interpreter translates softly and in real time for a few listeners.
Do I need two whispered interpreters?
For sessions longer than about half an hour, yes: whispering continuously is very demanding.
Is any equipment needed?
Not for one to three people nearby. For a visit or a slightly larger group, a portable microphone and light receivers are enough.
Does whispering disturb other participants?
The interpreter speaks very softly and sits away from the speakers. With a portable kit, the disturbance is almost nil.
How far in advance should I book?
