Procedures that require a translated criminal record

Working abroad

A foreign employer often asks for a recent extract, translated and apostilled.

Visa and immigration

Embassies and immigration services ask for the criminal record extract from your country of residence.

Studies and internships

Some universities and internship organisations abroad ask for a translated extract.

Working with children

A specific extract may be required: it must be understood by the employer or the foreign organisation.

Humanitarian missions

NGOs and international organisations ask for a recent extract in their working language.

Procedures in Belgium

A Belgian authority may require a criminal record extract from another country: it must then be translated.

Belgian extract

Request the extract from your commune, or from the Central Criminal Record of the FPS Justice if you no longer live in Belgium. Check the date required: many organisations ask for a recent extract, often less than three months old.

Outside the European Union, the extract usually needs an apostille or legalisation by the FPS Foreign Affairs; your commune can send it online for this step. We then translate the extract and have the translation legalised if necessary.

For a European Union country, an apostille is no longer required for a document certifying the absence of a criminal record (EU Regulation 2016/1191).

Foreign extract

An extract issued abroad must usually be apostilled or legalised in its country of origin, then translated by a sworn translator in Belgium if it is not written in the language of the procedure. We translate criminal record extracts from over 100 languages, with the exact legal terminology.
