When do you need it?

Situations that require a translated judgment

Divorce granted abroad

To have it recognised and registered in Belgium, the judgment must be understandable to the authorities.

Custody and maintenance

Enforcing a foreign decision in Belgium, or a Belgian decision in another country.

Enforcement of a decision

Having a judgment enforced in another country often requires its translation.

Ongoing proceedings

Lawyers and courts need foreign documents translated to add them to the case file.

International inheritance

Judgments, wills and deeds related to an inheritance across several countries.

Administrative file

A decision (adoption, divorce, change of name) may be required for a nationality or residence procedure.

Belgian decision

A Belgian judgment for use abroad

A Belgian court decision intended for use abroad must first be filed with the FPS Justice, before the apostille or legalisation by the FPS Foreign Affairs. We translate the decision into the language of the destination country and have the translation legalised.

Within the European Union, many decisions circulate under simplified rules: your lawyer will tell you which documents are needed, and we translate those that must be translated.

Legal accuracy

An exact legal translation

A judgment is translated faithfully, without interpretation: operative part, grounds, references to statutory provisions, names and dates must be rendered precisely. Our sworn translators know Belgian legal terminology and that of the country concerned, and every translation is proofread before delivery.

Your documents are handled in strict confidence; a non-disclosure agreement can be signed on request.

    FAQ

Frequently asked questions about judgment translation

Do I need a sworn translation for a foreign judgment?

Usually yes, so that a Belgian court, commune or authority can examine it, if it is not written in the language of the proceedings.

Does the judgment need to be legalised?

A Belgian judgment intended for use abroad goes through the FPS Justice and then the FPS Foreign Affairs. For a foreign judgment, check the requirements of the receiving authority: we help you verify them.

    Do you translate long decisions?

Yes. For a decision of several dozen pages, we propose a suitable deadline in the quote.

    Are my documents kept confidential?

Yes. Your documents are handled in strict confidence and a non-disclosure agreement can be signed on request.

How much does a judgment translation cost?

The price depends on the language, the number of pages and the deadline. Send your decision: you receive a fixed price within 5 minutes.

    A court decision to translate?
