Procedures that require a translated marriage certificate
Marriage abroad
To have your marriage recognised or registered in Belgium, the commune asks for the certificate, legalised and translated if necessary.
Family reunification
The Immigration Office and the commune ask for the marriage certificate to establish the link between the spouses.
Belgian nationality
Some nationality procedures rely on the marriage: the certificate must be understandable to the authorities.
Divorce or separation
The court or your lawyer may ask for the foreign marriage certificate to be translated.
Notary and inheritance
Matrimonial property regime, sale of a property, inheritance: the notary may ask for the marriage certificate.
Procedures abroad
Your Belgian marriage certificate must be recognised in another country: sworn translation and apostille.
Having a marriage celebrated abroad recognised in Belgium
A foreign marriage certificate must usually be legalised or apostilled in the country where the marriage took place, then translated by a sworn translator in Belgium if it is not written in the language of the procedure (French or Dutch in Brussels).
If the marriage took place in another European Union country, an apostille is no longer required (EU Regulation 2016/1191), and a multilingual standard form attached to the certificate generally removes the need for a translation.
The commune then checks whether the marriage can be recognised under Belgian law. The translation alone is not enough, but it is essential for your file to be examined.
A Belgian marriage certificate for use abroad
To have your marriage recognised in another country, request the certificate from the commune where it was celebrated, then entrust us with the sworn translation into the language of the destination country.
Outside the European Union, the certificate and its translation usually need an apostille or legalisation: we handle the application with the FPS Foreign Affairs.

Frequently asked questions about marriage certificate translation
Does a foreign marriage certificate need to be translated?
Yes, if it is not written in the language of the procedure (French or Dutch in Brussels). For a certificate from another EU country accompanied by a multilingual standard form, a translation is generally not required.
Must the certificate be legalised first?
For a certificate issued outside the European Union, usually yes: apostille or legalisation in the country of origin, then sworn translation in Belgium.
Is the translation enough to have my marriage recognised?
No: the commune or the authority decides on recognition. The sworn translation makes the certificate understandable and admissible.
How long does it take?
Usually less than 24 hours for a marriage certificate. An urgent service is possible depending on the language.
How much does a marriage certificate translation cost?
The price depends on the language, the length of the certificate and the deadline. Send a photo of your certificate: you receive a fixed price within 5 minutes.
