Spain is a member of the European Union: for public documents covered by EU Regulation 2016/1191 (birth, marriage, nationality, absence of a criminal record…), an apostille is no longer required. Ask the Registro Civil for a multilingual standard form to attach to the certificate: in principle, this makes a translation unnecessary.
A Spanish driving licence is valid in Belgium, like any licence issued in the European Union: you do not need to exchange it or have it translated to drive.
A document from Latin America: apostille or legalisation?
Documents from Latin America must be authenticated in their country of origin before their sworn translation in Belgium.
| Country of origin of the document | Formality before translation |
|---|---|
| Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Dominican Republic | Apostille issued by the competent authority of the country |
| Cuba | Legalisation by the Cuban authorities, then by the competent Belgian consular post |
Another country? Tell us: we will check the procedure. An apostille or legalisation does not in itself guarantee that the document will be accepted: the Belgian authorities may ask for other documents.

Frequently asked questions about sworn translation from Spanish
Does a Spanish birth certificate need to be translated?
Not always: if a European multilingual standard form is attached to the certificate, a translation is in principle not needed. Otherwise, the commune asks for a sworn translation into French or Dutch.
Does my Colombian or Mexican certificate need an apostille?
Yes: Colombia and Mexico apply the Hague Apostille Convention. The certificate must bear an apostille from their competent authority before the sworn translation in Belgium.
Does my Latin American driving licence need to be translated for the exchange?
If your licence can be exchanged, the City of Brussels asks for a sworn translation when it is not written in French, Dutch or English, which is the case for a licence in Spanish. Check the rule with your commune.
Do you translate into Dutch and English?
Yes. We translate from Spanish into French, Dutch and English, and vice versa.
How much does a sworn translation from Spanish cost?
The price depends on the document, its length and the deadline. Send a photo: you receive a fixed price within 5 minutes.
